Internship Overview

A Legacy of Learning

We have had interns at Atlantic Wellness since 2014 and we have had exactly 60 interns thus far in 11 years.

The vast majority have been from Yorkville University but also from University of New Brunswick consisting of Masters level students completing their Masters in Counselling Psychology.

Many of these interns were teachers, resource and administrators in the school districts and have gone on to be the future guidance counsellors and district leaders in the education system. We have also had interns go on to work in Northern communities working in high needs indigenous communities and even start their own counselling clinics in private practice across the Maritimes.

Four of our permanent staff team, including two managers and our outreach counselling therapist were previous intern students that stayed on with Atlantic Wellness. Currently our internship program is contributing to almost 50% of our therapy hours provided to youth and young adults in our community.

Training Future Leaders

Atlantic Wellness is passionate about training up the future counselling therapists entering the workforce after their completion of their Masters Programs. In recognition of this, we have received certification from Yorkville as a Yorkville Approved Practicum Site with three (3) Yorkville approved practicum supervisors on-site.

I’m currently interning with Atlantic Wellness as part of Yorkville University’s Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology degree, supporting increasing clinical hours and helping more youth get help when they need it. I’m passionate about youth mental health because adolescence is a time of discovery and I know how important it is to feel supported while you are figuring out who you are and what you believe in. I am especially committed to supporting 2SLGBTQIA+ youth by creating affirming spaces where they feel understood and empowered to define their own stories. Outside of work, I enjoy gardening, baking, cooking, reading, gaming, and hanging out with my family.

Intern Success Stories

We've been lucky to keep a few interns around over the years by moving them into permanent staff positions.

Jason Jones

Counselling Therapist

Jason Jones

My name is Jason Jones, and I am known as the intern student that wouldn't go away. I loved the primary purpose of Atlantic Wellness so much (free unlimited counselling for youth and young adults) that I just wouldn't leave. I completed double the amount of volunteer hours required until they found the money to hire me. We have always had an amazing team that are single-minded in our purpose of helping youth and young adults. I would never work for another organization. I found my home for purpose and passion.

Clinical Intake Manager

Kaydi Hayden

I first joined Atlantic Wellness as a practicum student in 2019 and had an incredibly positive experience. The strong sense of teamwork, excellent support, and the opportunity to work with a demographic I’m passionate about truly stood out to me. After gaining experience as a crisis counsellor during the pandemic, I was contacted by Atlantic Wellness in early 2022 about a full-time therapist position. Given the lasting impact of my internship, I was eager to return. Since then, I’ve continued to grow professionally and now serve as the Clinical Intake Manager at Atlantic Wellness. I’m truly grateful to have begun my professional journey here!

I joined this team because I wanted to work in a supportive, collaborative atmosphere with other clinicians who care deeply about counselling and mental health. I like learning from others, and being exposed to new ideas and perspectives helps me to grow as a psychotherapist. The approach at Atlantic Wellness focuses on the healing potential of relationships and this aligns with my personal and professional values. Building trust allows counselling to be a place where clients can engage in self-discovery and self-expression. The quality of relationships in a teen's life can make all the difference and it is an honor to work to build a therapeutic environment where youth have opportunities to create meaning out of what are often very challenging circumstances.
